"The joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you"
The world can be an unkind place. You can see it on the news, on your social media feed, every time you turn on the radio. There's a lot of stress and anger out there; combine that with the sheer number of things we all have to do on a daily basis, life can seem pretty overwhelming and, well ... not fun.
While we at Pear Tree know that these times can be incredibly fraught, we FIRMLY believe that some things could -- and should -- be as stress-free and easy as possible. Wait, no. Not simply stress-free and easy ... they should also be ENJOYABLE. More things in life should be fun.
In the town where I grew up, there was a local man (who may or may not actually have been Santa Claus -- in my memory he looks JUST like Santa. In suspenders) who ran a little gift shop out of the back rooms of his farmhouse at Christmastime. It was filled with -- well. It was filled with the kinds of things kids would love: completely random and very inexpensive items, to be specific. At six, I thought it was AMAZING. We would go there specifically for my sister and I to buy Christmas presents for friends, family, and teachers with our allowance.
Every trip there was an event. The thing that stands out the most for me will always be the complete joy of the experience. The happiness of the shop owner, who ran his little pop-up shop specifically for kids and folks who wanted to give, but didn't have unlimited funds. The fun it was to look through all of the items (and there were a lot of them) for that perfect thing, the thing that would make my friend or aunt or teacher smile when she opened it.
Shopping for gifts was a treat.
When did it become a chore?
The truth is that life is challenging. There is so much to do (and so little time to do it all in) that it's easy to lose your love for things that used to seem magical and glorious. In the rush of "need to get it done, I want to cross this item off my list" it can be easy to forget the following:
Shopping for a gift is MEANT to be fun.
The purpose of buying a gift is to make someone smile and to let them know you care about them. It's to make them feel celebrated and adored. It should be an experience that you look forward to, not just another task that you check off your daily calendar.
We believe that gift giving is beautiful. It is an act of love and caring in times that, frankly, aren't always as loving as they could be.
We believe in the art of gift giving. We believe that you still believe in it, too. We're here to help you to put the love and joy back into giving gifts, and we're happy to do it; the joy you give is the joy you get.
Let's all find more happy.
